5 Worshippers Die, Others Hospitalized After Church Feast In Ibadan

30 September

Reported by Ayooluwa Afolabi

A shocking incident occurred at a white-garment church in Ibadan, Oyo State, during a Sunday service, leaving five worshippers dead and several others receiving medical treatment at the Infectious Disease Centre (IDC) in Olodo.

According to Report Afrique, the incident has sparked concerns over the safety of the church’s traditional “Ipese” feast, which is a communal meal served during special occasions.

The feast, which was held during the church service last Sunday, has been linked to the outbreak of an unknown illness that has claimed five lives.

According to sources, around 50 worshippers have been discharged from the IDC after receiving medical care.

The church community is still grappling with the aftermath of the tragic event, which has drawn the attention of various government agencies, including the police, Directorate of State Services (DSS), and World Health Organization (WHO).

An investigation into the cause of the deaths is currently underway, but officials have yet to release any findings. A church source revealed that some members of the congregation had eaten the same food as the victims without falling ill, suggesting that other factors may be at play.

The church’s Shepherd-in-Charge has been cooperating with authorities and undergoing tests to determine the cause of the outbreak.

The IDC has confirmed that many patients are still receiving treatment, and officials expect the state commissioner for health to address the press about the incident next week.

The police have also confirmed that an investigation is underway and are working closely with other agencies to determine the cause of the tragedy.
