AFCON qualifiers: CAF hands victory to Nigeria, fines Libya $50,000
The Confederation of African Football's (CAF) Disciplinary Committee has awarded the Super Eagles of Nigeria three points and three goals after Libya failed to host their scheduled matchday 4 fixture for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers on October 15 in Benina.
In a decision announced on Saturday, CAF Disciplinary Board Chairman Ousmane Kane confirmed that the Libya Football Federation breached Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations, as well as Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code.
Additionally, CAF imposed a $50,000 fine on the Libya Football Federation, with payment required within 60 days of notification.
This ruling brings Nigeria closer to qualifying for the 2025 AFCON, leaving them with two games remaining. The Super Eagles now have 10 points from four matches, placing them four points ahead of the second-placed Benin Republic. Rwanda sits third with five points, while Libya, with only one point, is out of contention for qualification.
A win or draw against Benin Republic's Cheetahs in Abidjan on November 14 (matchday 5) will secure Nigeria’s spot in the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco, set for December 2025 to January 2026.
