Former President Muhammadu Buhari has paid tribute to former Military Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, in celebration of his 90th birthday.

In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, Buhari praised Gowon’s visionary leadership and his steadfast commitment to the unity and progress of Nigeria. He acknowledged Gowon’s significant contributions to the nation, stating, \"We honor his invaluable contributions to our nation’s continued existence as one, and the progress that has come with that.\"

According to The Punch,Buhari described Gowon as a distinguished statesman and a successful military leader, commending his strategic governance during pivotal moments in Nigeria’s history. He emphasized that both older and younger generations of Nigerians would continue to take pride in Gowon’s legacy and the officers who served under his leadership.

\"I pay homage to all those who served and laid their lives for the country. Gowon and the team he led will continue to inspire young generations and the nation for a long time,\" Buhari said.

He further lauded Gowon’s courage and dedication to Nigeria’s well-being, highlighting key initiatives like the establishment of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Buhari also expressed admiration for Gowon’s ongoing efforts to promote national unity through his initiative, \'Nigeria Prays.\'

Gowon will celebrate his 90th birthday on Saturday, October 19, 2024.
