Makinde Speaks to Protesters About Ibadan Circular Road, Reiterates Commitment to 500-Meter Plan

Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, on Monday, addressed protesters who are affected by the government’s decision to set aside 500 meters left and right for the Ibadan Circular Road project.

Gov Makinde, while addressing protesters on Day 4 of the protest reinstated those 500 meters left and right had come to stay. He said the government will not take less than 500 meters as planned but will integrate existing buildings that fall outside 150 meters into the corridor.

Gov Makinde said the government will not pull down any house that falls within the additional 350 meters of the Circular Road Corridor.

He took his time to explain how the road project was increased from 150 meters to 500 meters in 2018 and gazette by late former governor Abiola Ajimobi.

Governor Makinde appreciated the protesters for the peaceful conduct of their protest and not resolving into a violent one.

“I take my time to visit the Ibadan Circular Road project every two weeks to monitor the situation of things. I can tell your number of houses to be affected is not up to 400,000 as claimed. We will integrate where we have a dense population into the project. I can tell you confidently, that no house within the corridor will be demolished but no new structure should be erected as of now”.

Gov Makinde attributed the marking and demolition notice carried out by the Ministry of Lands and Urban Development to the information gap.

He called for peaceful dialogue with the leaders of the affected LGAs. He urged the entire affected areas to select Committee Members to meet with the government on modalities to ensure the welfare of every house owner.

Gov Makinde said no one believes the Circular Road project will become a reality during their lifetime. 

He called for the continued support of his administration as a people-oriented government.
The protesters unanimously demanded no corridor in the project.
