Minimum Wage: Nigerian Governors Forum Convene Emergency Meeting In Abuja

26 June

Reported by Ayooluwa Afolabi

On Wednesday, the 36 state governors in Nigeria will meet in Abuja over the issues of the proposed new minimum wage.

The governors previously rejected the federal government\'s proposal of N62,000, stating that some states would need to borrow funds to pay salaries if this amount were implemented.

However, organized labour is still demanding a N250,000 minimum wage.

The governors’ emergency meeting is coming after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) postponed its decision on the minimum wage issue on Tuesday.

According to SaharaReporters, The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, on Tuesday told journalists that the FEC could not make a decision due to the involvement of local government, state governments, the federal government, and the organized private sector.

The acting Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), Halima Ahmed, told Daily Trust that the governors would meet on Wednesday at 7 pm in Abuja to discuss the matter.
