Tinubu,Shettims Trips don\'t Represent Common Sense - Obi

18 October

Reported by Oluwaseun Adeniyi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has criticized the foreign trips of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, stating that these travels do not reflect common sense given Nigeria\'s domestic challenges.

The Punch reports that Tinubu departed for the United Kingdom on October 2, 2024, for a two-week working leave and then traveled to France on October 11 for what was described as \"another important engagement.\" Vice President Shettima, meanwhile, left Nigeria for Sweden on October 16 for a two-day visit for bilateral talks.

The Presidency defended both absences, stating that there is no leadership vacuum as the two leaders remain fully engaged with Nigeria\'s affairs despite being abroad.

In response, Obi expressed concern on social media, stating that the simultaneous absence of both the President and Vice President during a time of national hardship is troubling. He pointed out that citizens are facing significant challenges due to policies from Tinubu’s administration, which require the leaders\' urgent attention.

Obi questioned why Tinubu, who was in Paris, didn’t attend the bilateral talks in Sweden, as the distance between the two cities is short. Instead, Shettima had to travel a much longer distance from Abuja to represent Nigeria. Obi argued that this approach wastes time and resources, especially when Nigeria is facing severe economic struggles. He emphasized the need for responsible leadership and fiscal discipline during these tough times.

Obi also noted that this is the second time both Tinubu and Shettima have been absent from the country at the same time since taking office 17 months ago. The first instance was in April-May 2024, when Tinubu traveled to the UK after visits to the Netherlands and Saudi Arabia, and Shettima attended summits in Nairobi and Dallas before cutting his trip short to return to Nigeria. Tinubu returned to Nigeria in early May.
