A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, claiming the life of a driver whose white Mazda bus collided with a moving truck near Car Park C, in the Lotto area of the highway.

According to The PUNCH, The driver, who was the sole occupant of the bus loaded with bags of potatoes, was reportedly heading to Lagos when the crash occurred. Witnesses at the scene suggested that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to a loss of control and rear-ending the truck.

In a statement, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Enforcement and Compliance Agency, confirmed the fatal accident. He attributed the crash to excessive speed and potential driver fatigue.

"Eyewitnesses reported that the driver was speeding and likely dozed off. The Mazda bus, loaded with potatoes for early morning delivery, veered off course and struck a Dangote truck from behind. Unfortunately, the driver died instantly, trapped in the wreckage until emergency personnel were able to free him," Akinbiyi explained.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and urged drivers to be more cautious, especially at night. Akinbiyi highlighted the dangers of speeding and fatigue, which often lead to preventable accidents.

“We advise motorists to avoid night travel and reduce speed to prevent further loss of life on our roads,” he said.

This accident underscores the importance of heightened road safety awareness and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly on high-traffic highways like the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
