Tragic As Petrol Tanker Explosion Claims 140 Lives in Jigawa

A devastating explosion involving a petrol tanker in Majiya Town, Taura Local Government Area, Jigawa State has resulted in at least 140 deaths and left many others hospitalized. The incident occurred early yesterday morning around 12:30 AM when the tanker, en-route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and overturned near Khadija University.

According to The Sun ,DSP Lawan Adam, the Police Public Relations Officer, the fatalities were largely due to residents rushing to collect fuel from the overturned tanker. While they were scooping fuel, the tanker exploded, igniting a massive fire that killed 94 individuals on the spot. Approximately 50 others sustained severe injuries and were transported to Ringim and Hadejia General Hospitals for urgent medical care.

Authorities have initiated a mass burial for the victims and have stressed the importance of public awareness regarding the dangers of collecting fuel from accident sites. Jigawa State Commissioner of Police AT Abdullahi expressed his condolences to the families affected, stating, \"This is a heartbreaking moment for us all. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved.\"

He called for increased public education on the risks associated with petrol explosions and urged residents to report such incidents to prevent further tragedies. \"Safety must be our priority,\" he emphasized.
