Two Dead, Others Injured In Palliative Stampede

22 March

Not less than two female students have tragically lost their lives, with several others injured following a stampede that occurred at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, on Friday.

The chaotic scene occurred on Friday at the university's convocation square which was the venue for the distribution of palliatives to the students by the Nasarawa State government.

It was gathered that the two female students had suffocated due to the large crowd and were later declared dead by healthcare workers.

The National President of the Nasarawa State Students Association confirmed the incident, saying that the affected students had been rushed to hospitals around the area to receive urgent medical attention.

He also stated that the stampede was a result of a large number of students wanting to access the aid which overwhelmed the varsity's security causing many students to sustain several degrees of injuries.

While commending the university and state government's swift response, the incident underscores the current challenges of managing aid distribution in densely populated areas in Nigeria.

The State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, recently distributed two 7.5 kg bags of rice and N5,000 to each student of the Federal University of Lafia, Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia, and the College of Education, Akwanga.
