17 July

Reported by Ayooluwa Afolabi

Students of the University of Ibadan have embarked on a protest to express their dissatisfaction over the introduction of a 10-hour daily electricity supply within the campus.

It was gathered that the institution introduced a 10-hour daily electricity supply, effective from Tuesday, July 16.

The students, who closed the major entrance gates into the school are not comfortable with the mode of distributing electricity, saying that the bulk of supply would be made when they were in lectures not when they need it their residential halls.

The students blocked the major roads on campus making vehicular movement impossible. It was gathered that the protest started yesterday night and lasted till 2 am today.

The new policy decision by the school management was contained in a memo issued by the Department of Works and Maintenance of the institution.

According to NewsBreakNaija, the memo, dated 16th July 2024, was signed by the Director of Works, Engineer O.A. Adetolu.

The letter reads, “Effective immediately, the Vice-Chancellor has approved a 10-hour daily electricity supply on Campus as follows: 1. Day Time: 08 a.m. 02 p.m. (6 hours) 2. Night Time: 10 p.m. 02 a.m. (4 hours).

“Kindly adhere strictly to the approved schedule. Thank you”.

Some students of the institution, who reacted against the policy while speaking with NewsBreak Naija campus correspondents, frowned at the development, saying that 10hrs electricity supply is not sufficient for them.

A few of them added that considering the fact that there are no alternative sources of electricity on the campus, there is a need for the institution to review its policy in a way that would make the campus livable for students.

They however urged the management to invest in infrastructure and renewable energy sources to ensure stable electricity supply on campus.
