Youths to Protest Oyo Ogbomoso Highway Abandonment

19 October

Reported by Oluwaseun Adeniyi

A youth coalition in Ogbomoso has announced plans for a peaceful protest over the Federal Government\'s neglect of the Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway. The demonstration, set to take place today (Saturday), will be held between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. at Takie Junction in Ogbomoso.

In a statement shared with Saturday PUNCH, Peter Adekunle, one of the protest organizers under the banner #OperationFixOgbomosoRoadNow, explained that the protest is aimed at drawing attention to the deteriorating state of the road.

The Oyo-Ogbomoso expressway, which connects southern and northern Nigeria, has been plagued by numerous accidents and fatalities due to its poor condition. According to the youths, despite sending multiple letters to relevant authorities, no action has been taken to address the issue.

The statement read in part, \"The past few weeks have seen the worst road conditions in recent history. About 20 people have lost their lives, there’s been a gridlock of heavy-duty vehicles, and countless goods and livestock have been lost. What should be a 15 km journey now takes up to five days, which has crippled the local economy and made life unbearable for residents.\"

The youths are hoping the protest will compel the government to take immediate action to fix the road and prevent further loss of lives.
